We are thrilled to receive a $74,000 grant from the El Camino Hospital Community Benefit Program to fund a new Garden to Cafeteria program and support our nutrition focused lessons in grades transitional kindergarten through fourth grade.
With the new Garden to Cafeteria program, Living Classroom will grow more fruits and vegetables at several school campuses to be used in the school district's lunch program. We will develop a campaign to promote the school garden-grown food along with locally sourced produce.
Students will assist Living Classroom garden manager, Patti Berryhill, in planting and harvesting produce and maintaining the edible gardens. This provides children with the experience of growing nutritious food and eating it in their school lunches.
The grant will also fund edible garden expansion at a few schools and a "kitchen on wheels" that will travel among the participating schools for the food services staff to use to prepare fresh dishes on site.
